Is Dororo a boy or a girl? Anime and manga did it in the world because Osamu Tezuka left a legacy through its phenomenal series of Dororo sleeves. The guy is basically a legendary god in himself no matter what time you put his works on! In the 2019 reboot of his famous work, Dororo (1967-1969), there is a question that always intrigues the mind of the fans: "Is it Dororo a Child or a Girl?" And the mangaka pulled us a top-up fixer because it left the fans hanging on this subplot until the end of its original 4-volume Dororo sleeve series. To ease the curiosity of fans, let me answer and discuss this question here. Disclaimer: I will discuss the anime a lot to answer this question correctly. So, please be careful with spoilers! Let's start with the first episode. When you see Dororo's Episode 1, the shock factor is strong. I was foolish, not least, because the anime progressed in the first 10 minutes. First, the enormous curiosity hit me because the show doesn't even seem to be about Dororo! The boy named Dororo appeared only in the second half of the episode anyway. Second, Dororo's character confused me. "What exactly am I looking at?" were the first thoughts that came to mind. I kept asking, "Is this child a child or a child?"Contents cover1. Is Doro a boy or a girl? The fans, including me, are confused with the real genre because Dororo never acted like a girl. However, reality is slightly different from what it seems to be. Dororo is a girl. Dororo, however, insisted that he be a child in the entire series of animes. This is because of the time the series is developed. After the death of his parents, as a child, Dororo escaped from the chains of oppression where he could have been sold or forced to work for people in power. There is no single female bone in your small body when fans first encounter this intriguing character. Talk like a child, act like a child, and even dress like one! In the Sengoku Jidai Era (the timeline that the anime series takes place), girls or women wear kimonos and yukatas. These beautiful traditional costumes complement the refinement and immensity of women. It also prohibits girls from fresno movements because the long trails of kimonos and yukatas could cause them to stumble. But seeing Dororo for the first time, there's hardly any indication that she's a lady! It doesn't have a proper female outfit for its size. And that's why I was confused. 2. The voice behind Dororo When I finished the first episode, a little clue to discover the genre of Dororo almost happened to me – the voice of Dororo acting. This is the strongest clue available in the first episode that Dororo is a girl. It's a subtle track but the fans who listen carefully to the voice that acts are smart! They have quickly reached the gender of the person who provides the Dororo dialogue. In Episode 1, a sweet soft voice came out when Dororo made his debut. But the anime tries to hide this by emphasizing Dororo's bowling sides. When I heard the voice acting again, I'm convinced it belongs to a girl. And when I looked at the show in '', my curiosities crumbled. A photograph of a female voice actress was provided in the database. Just going with the above points would be enough for you to conclude that Dororo is a child from the first episode. However, the voice that acts by bringing the character of Dororo to life says the opposite! In fact, the current 15-year-old female actress, Rio Suzuki, has been acting in several television magazines and live movies since 2013! This will show how excellent it is in the film industry. She was also only 13 to 14 years old when she was launched as the deuteragonist Dororo in the reboot! What a lovely child actress to play the part! Why did Dororo look like a child? The next question is why? Why does Dororo appear like a child? Well, there are several answers to this question, especially when it comes to parenting. Dororo's parents raised her to dress like a child because they think she had better chances of staying alive. The constant war is happening across the land. If you show up like a girl walking through the countryside, your body is likely to be on a river in three days. I'm not kidding. That's the worst thing that can happen to a girl or a female teenager if she wanders around in that period. Living in the Sengoku Jidai Era is not a joke. Women are also vulnerable when they become widows: they can be banished to the streets by their husbands' family. Dororo's goal is to protect itself – not just stay alive! The young girls of the Warring State Age are constantly defending themselves from thieves, slave traffickers and even pimpers! Therefore, it makes sense that Dororo disguised himself as a child during his travels with Hyakkimaru. Even if some fans disagree about the methods that parents applied about their daughter, Dororo's survival possibilities increased. I hate to admit it, but his parents made the right decision. In doing so, Dororo's life was not cut. A hedgehog boy who lives in the streets of Sengoku Jidai (Japan Warring State Age) has a better chance of survival compared to a hedgehog girl. And for another thing, if Dororo presented herself as a girl, she would have been exploited. It would have been sold to child slavery or to high-level brothels! It's tragic, I tell you! Growing up like a child, Dororo also saw the world from the eyes of men. She learned to act brave, to be tough, and to fight the bullies when the need arises. Parents were strong supporters of their daughter's masculinity, of course. And with Dororo's behavior, his childhood lifestyle consumed the formative years of his childhood. Not long after, his parents died for a betrayal. And so, Dororo stays to defend himself. The only values of her parents who stayed with her are: "If you act like a tough child, you can survive longer in this world." It's sad, but true! Since that was her childhood years, she carried those values even during her first meeting with Hyakkimaru (the main character of the show). To minimize the risk of gender disclosure, I bet you were told that you are forbidden to act like a girl in front of others! But there could have been a while in the past when this is impossible. For example, should I pose as a child to others when bathing or when nature calls? I bet it would be difficult for her since she was not taught how a girl should act in these situations. Rather, she must adapt to the situation as she sees fit. Dororo's alley, don't book smart. Even if it seems that it does not have proper academic education, learns by doing. No wonder you can hide your true gender after all these years! Her practicality and ingenuity also helped her survive in these war-torn lands, even if she is just a child. And for Dororo and Hyakkimaru who currently live in a terrible time, "the survival of the most appropriate" is all that matters in a time and place where a curfew at 6 pm seems to cause the least worries! 4. Hints About the Dororo genre You may have lost! As the anime advances, there are scenes when the real genre of Dororo is insinuated to the public: Girls and widows are exploited by the rich and powerful oppressors of the earth. If you remember how Daimyo Daigo Kagemitsu made a pact with demons in Hell Hall, you will understand how cold and heartless he would have been to his own son! Note that "Daimyo" is the Japanese terminology used for local nobles or lords in the feudal era. Hyakkimaru is Daigo's own flesh and blood – his firstborn son. However, when Daigo saw how careless his son was when he left his mother's womb, he left Hyakkimaru! After all, the LGBT community could not have had strong supporters yet during the last years of 1960. But when compared to today's generation, Dororo's representation in the anime speaks loud and clear to his audience. He could be a deuteragonist despite being the character of the anime. However, she acts as Hyakkimaru's reliable "hands and feet," which relies heavily on prosthetic limbs. Many of the animes I have seen today also focus on the romances of high school and magic. (But I don't complain about these kinds of shows. In fact, I am in love with "Fruits Basket", "Jibaku Shōnen Hanako-kun", and "Kaguya-sama: Love is War" anime shows me.) However, it would be nice to get a new anime with a tasty plot once in a while. And this is how this masterpiece of a series comes into play: to stumble on Dororo (2019) is like finding a pearl that is hidden twenty-three thousand leagues under the sea!6.
