The legs appear twisted, a condition that is the result of . Kitten with bilateral rear legs Contract tendons are not genetic, but they are very likely the result of the foetus' bad position within the amniotic sac and the lurking in the uterus. As the kitten grew inside her pregnant mother, there was not enough room for her legs to get normally or to move, so the twisted legs as they grew and stiffed because they could not move and flex. Swimmer Syndrome in Kittens From swimmer to runner! After treatment, Apple had perfect mobility. What is Swimmer syndrome? Swimmer syndrome is a congenital condition that can occur in young kittens, causing the legs (usually the rear limbs) to be played laterally. The kitten can have a stance similar to the frog, with the hips that are attached to the side of the body and feet that face the sides, instead of placing under the body. Kittens with swim syndrome will find it difficult or impossible to stop and walk. Although most literature suggests that swimmer syndrome is more common in puppies, this is simply not true. Many kittens are born with swimmer syndrome, but are very commonly euthanized, although the condition is treatable through early intervention and physical therapy. If you have recently rescued a kitten with swimsuit syndrome, you do not discourage. Act quickly, and you can be able to make one for the mobility of the kitten. What causes Swimmer syndrome? The cause of swimmer syndrome is not yet fully understood in scientific literature. It seems to have a strong genetic component, with multiple kittens in a litre that often present with splayed limbs. Kittens can also be affected by a unbalanced diet of the mother cat, which can lead to musculoskeletal problems and ligaments poor for their young. The tendons around the hips can be quite loose, causing the hips to be excessively flexible and to go out. There is no diagnostic test for swimmer syndrome; it is diagnosed by visual observation and kittens should start treatment as soon as possible. Swimmer Syndrome is Evident About 3 weeks old To the left, a 3-week kitten with swimmer syndrome. On the right, a 3-week kitten with standard leg position. Rescuers should not assume that a kitten has swimmer syndrome if it is under 3 weeks old, as newborn kittens may seem to have played limbs simply because of age. 0-3-week-old kittens do not have muscle development and motor skills to place a foot completely under the body and walk. For 3 weeks of age, however, a kitten will normally begin to learn to walk. If the limbs are played in such a way that the feet are pointed out out out, a veterinarian should be consulted quickly to confirm if the kitten has swim syndrome. If you're not sure how old your kitten is, take a look at my handy one. Early intervention is critical The body of a young kitten is growing rapidly, both in the development of bone and muscle mass, and in the development of motor skills. Intervening as close to 3 weeks of age as possible, caregivers can get the body of the kitten in an appropriate position and teach the kitten to walk within a relatively short period of time. Leg Wrapping and Hobbles Primary therapy for swimmer syndrome is to record or wrap your legs so that your hips, knees and ankles are square. There are several methods to do this, but what I most recommend is to create adoquins using medical tape: Use one that does not pull on the skin or skin when it is removed. Find the knees of the kitten, which are located in the abdomen. Manually straighten the joint to stretch the knee out. Wrap your medical tape around 2 times. Repeat on the other knee. Find the ankles of the kitten: the joint at the end of the foot. Wrap your medical tape around 2 times. Repeat for the other ankle. Manually place the hips, knees and ankles to a degree that does not cause pain to the kitten. You can always start with a wider gap between the limbs, and slowly approach them in a period of several days. Once you have your legs in the right position, apply a ribbon line that connects your recorded knees and your recorded hips. Remove and replace one twice a day for physical therapy exercises. Physical Therapy Exercises Once twice a day, unwrap your legs completely for physical therapy exercises. Range of motion exercises: gently stretch the straight limb, then bend each joint until the foot is below the body. Repeat several times in each leg. Cycling: holding the kitten on the lap, gently cycling the legs. Foot Placement: While the kitten eats a meal, place your feet under the body. Stimulate steps: use a toy to attract the kitten to take action to it. Massage each leg while keeping it in the right position. You got this! Care for a swimsuit syndrome kitten is a very rewarding experience. You will find that even a week of leg-taking/rupture and physical therapy can make the whole difference, and can give the kitten the gift of a life of mobility.
